The East Side
This is for people who haven’t made plans for the 4th of July weekend , but still want to get out and climb. Our last East Side Trip was a complete success, and the weather in SD for the 4th is a crap shoot, so why not head up to the Sierras for some blue skies, the smell of pine trees and pulling down on some granite with a back drop of the High Sierras. Maybe even a parade and some fireworks, if people are so inclined.

This is a low key event, with no specific timetable or schedule, and no reserved camping . The plan is to stay in the Mammoth area camp on BLM land, climb Clark Canyon and Crystal Crag , and hopefully get into the park to do some climbing in Mecca.

I will post further logistics as we get closer to the date.

Sorry I didn't make it out, the drive on Sunday night would have just been too much for me - I tried to take away my yes RSVP but I was too late...hope you all had fun. :)

Finally, everyone going should e-mail each other their cell numbers, so we can all stay in contact. Oh, and bring a bathing suit, in case we visit one of the many hot springs.

Not everyone has to agree and they?re free to explore the whole Sierras if they choose. On our last trip, for the last day, half the group went to Owens River Gorge and half went to the Buttermilks., and it worked out for everyone. I am nursing a finger injury and will be climbing nothing but moderates, but where we are going there will be climbing for all levels.

Here?s the plan, leave San Diego (Mira Mesa car park) Thursday night around 7:00 pm, camp in Lone Pine, Friday morning drive to Mammoth and climb Clark Canyon (Area 13). If you don?t have it , pick up ?Mammoth Area Rock Climbs?. Next day (Saturday) spend time in Mammoth, maybe watch some of the parade, climb Crystal Crag, watch fireworks (?). Sunday go into the park and climb Toulumne, I?m thinking Cathedral Peak.

There is a party I want to go to here in town on the 3rd. If by chance there is anyone who wants to drive up together and meet the group on the 4th, I would like to do that. Otherwise I will skip the party and do whatever everyone else is doing. Looking forward to doing some LEADING!!!!!!

Jeff, My first rock climb was there, in 1984. I remember a lot of loose rock, but I've been told there are some good routes there, and it's a beautiful setting for a climb.

Jack, I started looking into Crystal Crag. It looks amazing, have you climbed there before? Here is a cool pic of the North Arete http://www.summitpost.org/v...

Jeff, I got your e mail. I'm thinking either going up Thursday, the 2nd after work or the 3rd after work. I'm flexible on the dates. Planning on three days. Meet at the car park at 6 pm, Camp the first night in Lone Pine. Next morning drive to Mammoth, Clark Canyon. then in the next two days I would like to climb Crystal Crag, Mammoth Lakes and Cathedral Peak,Tuolumne, but I'm flexible. For people who don't caravan from SD, we'll connect by cell phone for our rendezvous.

A member sent me this e-mail, so I thought I'd address his concerns with everyone. (Sounds good, but given the long drive involved I'd need more of a specific agenda and timetable). So I sent this reply. Sorry, this is free form, play it, as it goes, my only agenda is to have fun, enjoy the Sierras, climb and hang out with like minded people.

    •  I had a blast with Jack and Tom. July 4 was super fun - went to the hotsprings in the morning, then watched the parade, walked around town, drank beers, ate hotdogs, climbed at Crystal Crag, and had dinner at Angels. What a way to spend the 4th!
    •  Thanks Doris and Tom for joining me in Mammoth, it's a 4th of July, I won't forget anytime soon.
