I received the following message from David P., Organizer of the SoCal Rock Climbing meetup and am re-posting it here.

From Troy Mayr:

"Friends of Williamson Rock,

It is time to make your voice heard!

The U.S. Forest Service is requesting public comments on a proposal to restore access to Williamson Rock.

The following link will direct you to the Access Funds action alert letter writing tool for Williamson Rock. Please respond right now!

http://www.accessfund...

The proposal envisions reopening some areas at Williamson Rock to the public and implementing measures, such as re-routing the approach trail, to protect the endangered mountain yellow-legged frog (MYLF) and its critical habitat. While the London and Stream Walls will remain temporarily closed to allow the MYLF population to recover, we believe that the proposal is a vast improvement over the status quo – total closure.

Personalized messages are the most effective form of communication when making comments to policy makers. Please use the wording in the Access Funds letter writing tool as a guide to help you explain why you think reopening climbing at Williamson Rock is a good idea. Feel free to embellish the letter with your personal connection to Williamson Rock and why this proposed action is important to you.

Your comments are needed to support their proposal to reopen climbing at this premier Southern California climbing area. The deadline for comment is Oct. 26th, 2009.

As you know, since 2004, the Angeles National Forest has banned climbing at Williamson Rock due to conflicts with critical habitat of the endangered Mountain Yellow Legged Frog. Now, after much work FoWR and the Access Fund are urging the Angeles National Forest to study alternate approach trails to Williamson, the Forest Service has issued a proposal that would reopen many of Williamson’s climbs while also protecting sensitive wildlife habitat. More info. on the specific proposal can be found here.

For those of you that have never been there, Williamson Rock is/was probably the best summertime sport climbing area in SoCal. I'm sure this group would enjoy it immensely if it were to be re-opened.
